This 5 minute video captures the conversations held around the country.
Rihanna is the victim of horrendous domestic violence
(her mouth was filled with blood,
she bent over to avoid fists in her face,
he bit her).
and Chris Brown is smiling and jet skiing
and looking at other women’s tushies (according to Gayle King). What is HE saying to his fans, when he busts up his girlfriend and then messes around at Diddy’s Florida mansion?
This IS a teachable moment, but we all need Rihanna to be SAFE. Not with Chris Brown. SAFE. She deserves it.
Guess who is up for FOOD SAFETY jobs at Department of Agriculture,
right when we are in the middle of a record food safety crisis?
1. Michael Taylor, a former Monsanto executive whose career literally fits the definition of the revolving door between government, lobbying and corporate interests. Before serving on the Obama ag transition team, Taylor made a name for himself rotating in and out of law firms, Monsanto, the USDA and FDA. While at the FDA he helped write the rules to allow rBGH into the American food system and our children’s milk.
2. On Monday, Secretary Vilsack is set to announce the appointment of Dr. Michael Osterholm, a food safety expert, to lead the Food Safety agency at the USDA. According to Food & Water Watch, Osterholm has been “a zealot in promoting th[e] controversial technology (of irradiation) as the panacea to contaminated food.” Irradiation allows food processors to nuke disease from contaminated food at the end of the production line, while ignoring the root problems that create unsafe food. For Osterholm, the recent peanut butter fiasco apparently was just another example of how irradiation could save the day.
“Clearly it’s a problem where the raw peanut butter or paste is consumed and not cooked,” Osterholm said. About the magnitude of America’s most recent food safety crisis, Osterholm said, “The recall has reached a level that is far beyond what’s necessary.” Try telling that to the relatives of the nine people who died and to the over 600 sick individuals across the country.
The problem, Osterholm doesn’t take constructive criticism of his favorite technology lightly. In 1999 he wrote an editorial calling food safety advocates who questioned the safety of irradiation terrorists. This doesn’t sound like the type of leader that the USDA needs right now.
Would you like to help defend America’s food supply?
Write Secretary Vilsack ( AgSec@usda.gov ) and tell him to stand strong on food safety.
Join Food Democracy Now! in calling for true reformers to be placed in positions at the USDA, FDA and beyond. We need a food safety system with some teeth – one that is independent of corporate interests.
The Stock Market doesn’t hate Obama, it hates the TRUTH. Americans don’t want to hear the truth.
Actually, we do. Desperately. We want someone to tell us the truth.
The TRUTH
that we’ve been spending more than we have
that we’ve refused to live within our means
that we’ve blinded ourselves to the woes of the world economy
that we’ve GREEDILY tried to make money any which way, unregulated
that we hate being babysat and don’t want regulations, until we get screwed by a couple of rich white guys
So the stock market has tanked hundreds of points. This is true.
It should tank a couple of thousand more.
Jobs have been lost by the millions, but they’ve been lost for the last 8 years, not the last two months. More will be lost, sadly.
Why?
Because we still don’t see and don’t wanna see the truth:
there are no reserves in banks and insurance companies and the shadow banking industry
that we cannot afford the lifestyle that we call ‘the American way of life’
that we need to tighten our belts for three or four years
that we need to take care of each other in our small communities, not take care of big corporations
that we need to hack 1/2 off the dollar amount in our heads, of whatever we think we own. 1/2 our house value, 1/2 our stock portfolio or savings account. Then we start afresh with 1/2 of what we thought we owned, but a more realistic number in this down economy.
we have to grow a heart like the Grinch and STOP saying ‘those stupid people who refuse to care for themselves’ about our fellow citizens, when we see corporations get away with financial murder of a global economy.
we need to have faith that we can start over again, this time not judging each other, but instead working with each other
We’re all pretty broke right now. Regardless of whether or not you own a home or not, or are working three jobs just to get by:
We do not want to be UNIQUELY AMERICAN for working 3 jobs to subsist! Do we?
Don’t we want America to stand for vitality, happiness, challenge, activity, togetherness?
The row was triggered by the termination on Wednesday of twin foetuses carried by a nine-year-old allegedly raped by her stepfather in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco.
The regional archbishop, Jose Cardoso Sobrinho, pronounced excommunication for the mother for authorising the operation and doctors who carried it out for fear that the slim girl would not survive carrying the foetuses to term.
“God’s law is above any human law. So when a human law … is contrary to God’s law, this human law has no value,” Cardoso had said.
He also said the accused stepfather would not be expelled from the church. Although the man allegedly committed “a heinous crime … the abortion – the elimination of an innocent life – was more serious”.
Battista Re agreed, saying: “Excommunication for those who carried out the abortion is just” as a pregnancy termination always meant ending an innocent life.
The case has sparked fierce debate in Brazil, where abortion is illegal except in cases of rape or if the woman’s health is in danger.
On Friday, President Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva hit out at Sobrinho’s decision, saying: “As a Christian and a Catholic, I deeply regret that a bishop of the Catholic church has such a conservative attitude.”
“The doctors did what had to be done: save the life of a girl of nine years old,” he said, adding that “in this case, the medical profession was more right than the church.”
The Catholic Church, the Vatican, a Bishop, all have said that the crime of the mother and doctors is enough to keep them from the ‘body of Christ’, the Holy Communion offered at Catholic Mass.
That’s one problem: the Catholic Church thinks that you can only receive Christ thru Communion in a Mass.
Not true, Christ’s attributes are available to all…
American Catholics, where will they stand on this repulsive, misogynist decision?
“Over the last eight years, government spending on contracts has doubled to over $500 billion,” he said. “Far too often, the spending is plagued by massive cost overruns, outright fraud, and the absence of oversight and accountability.”
Lest their be any ambiguity about where the real problem lies, the president took particular aim at defense contracting:
Last year, the Government Accountability Office, GAO, looked into 95 major defense projects and found cost overruns that totaled $295 billion. Let me repeat: That’s $295 billion in wasteful spending. … In Iraq, too much money has been paid out for services that were never performed, buildings that were never completed, companies that skimmed off the top. At home, too many contractors have been allowed to get away with delay after delay after delay in developing unproven weapons systems.
Uggh, fraud and cost overruns make me SICK.
According to WIRED, contractors have already figured out how to SPIN the conversation: they will put the blame for cost overruns not on the contractors, but on the military services for failing to be specific about what precisely they want built or delivered. “I would lead with [telling the government], ‘We waste money because you can’t make up your mind,’” an ex-official suggested.
Without transparency, TRUTH, and honesty, defense contractors could run the US into the ground, FAST.
More private school funding, to keep white kids out of the public school system,
ergo, away from blacks???
Rather than disrespecting the children of D.C., wouldn’t he be better served showing up at public schools in his own district, reading to kids, doing after school tutoring, sitting in the lunch room and listening to the kids about how he could help their schools? And they are just KIDS. If you can’t interact with a kid, then you should get a different job. Kids need love and food and safety and direction and stability. Provide that for them and they won’t join gangs. In South Carolina or D. C.
The white kids at the private school? Probably using higher quality, more expensive drugs than the public school poor kids. But look at the stats: the white kids won’t go to jail at as high a rate as the black kids. Don’t get me started…..
Everyone wants to get their kids OUT of public schools, and they do so by DEMONIZING CHILDREN (DC kids are gangsters? Bullsh*t) and asking for tax vouchers.
Why not just fix the public schools?
And, especially in DeMint’s district, INTEGRATE them?
No more money should go to vouchers until his public schools are integrated and high caliber. If he wants the vouchers so badly, to pander to his base, then he needs to fix education for the poorest in his state. He represents them too.
